A pharmacologist develops new prescriptions and over-the-counter
drugs. They perform tests to make sure the drugs are safe and to
determine how the drugs affect people at different dosages.
Pharmacologists may work for federal agencies such as the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), or they may work for pharmaceutical companies.
THINK ABOUT IT!
Physicians are beginning to cut back on low often they prescribe
antibiotics because the drugs are becoming less effective. Apparently,
some patients have taken antibiotics so often that some strains of
bacteria have become resistant to the drugs.
TALK ABOUT IT!
It takes about 10 years for the FDA to approve a new drug. Why do
you think it takes so long? Why are tough standards for drug approval
beneficial to patients?
DO IT!
Pharmacologists work with drug manufactures to make sure the
instruction labels are easy to understand. Take a look at a few labels
on medicine bottles and boxes and note how they are written. Are some
words in boldface print or color? Are there any illustrations?
