This classic set
inspired an activity that has been an American favorite for more than 50
years and appeals to today's children - engaging their imaginations just
as it did in 1951.
COLORFORMS
Colorforms is one
of the oldest and most respected names in the US toy industry. It
began in 1951, when two art students were experimenting with a new
medium, a flexible vinyl material. A friend, who manufactured
pocketbooks, thought they could find a creative use for the material.
The Kislevitzes discovered that the vinyl stuck to the glossy paint in
their bathroom. They cut shapes out of the material and placed
these geometric objects on the walls, leaving extra vinyl and a pair of
scissors out for guests to add to their creation.
After observing the
fun everyone had, Harry and Patricia decided to market this creative
activity as a consumer product. The item first launched through
FAO Schwarz and was considered by the New York Museum of Modern Art (MOMA)
for its permanent design collection. This reproduction of the
Kislevitzes' first product is in the same sleek black box used when it
first came to market.
Over time, the
Colorforms line has become a staple for young children with imaginative
play sets, games, puzzles and creative activities. The Colorforms
product range continues to build on time-honored play patterns that
generations of children have experienced and remember fondly.
Parents trust Colorforms to provide fun and imaginative play for young
children, while promoting creative expression, concentration skills and
speech development.
From the start,
Colorforms was a very progressive company. It is one of the first
brands in the toy industry to be featured in television commercials.
And amazingly, Colorforms is the very first plastic based creative toy
product to come to the market.
