Data, Chance, & Probability Kit
Description:
This hands-on activity book provides an introduction to data and
chance concepts for early primary students, based on the National
Council of Teachers for Mathematics (NCTM) Curriculum and Evaluation
Standards for School Mathematics.
This Data, Chance, and Probability Activity Book, 1 - 3 contains
reproducible blackline masters, teaching notes, and activity pages
designed to help children in grades 1 - 3 explore mathematical ideas
about outcomes, likelihood, data and its presentation, and probability.
The activates have been carefully developed to engage children in
exploring their own real world, especially the children's school
environment.
The focus of activities is on enhancing problem-solving and
communication skills. Individual activity pages can be used by children
working in pairs, with small groups, or as an entire class. Activities
are slightly more difficult as children progress through a section; the
increasing level of difficulty is more apparent from section to section.
Teaching Notes at the beginning of each section offer easy-to-follow
guidelines for every activity page, from materials needed to assessment
of student progress.
The three parts of each activity build problem-solving skills. First,
children have an opportunity to address a problem and predict results.
Then they experiment, collect and discuss data, and share their ideas
and results in small groups. Finally, in a larger class group, they can
discuss their conclusions, their interpretations, and the applications
of their ideas. The three parts of each activity page are clearly
labeled with words and icons.
