Game Description:

fractional number concepts by reinforcing strong images of fractional
parts and operations while building a strong association with abstract
notation.

Understandings has greatly enhanced the usefulness of the
pattern blocks
model by adding the 1/4 and 1/12 hexagon shapes to the
standard 1/2, 1/3
and 1/6. This expands the scope of fractions that can be
represented about three fold to more than ninety percent of those in
common
use.
In Thinkcards the
hexagon always represents 1. Students work with halves, thirds,
fourths, sixths and twelfths to build models of fractions and mixed
numbers, their relationships, sums and differences.
These activities
address the NCTM recommendations that 'representing numbers with various
physical materials should be a major part of mathematics instruction'
and that 'students should be able to explain their method of solution.'
