Game of Golf in a Tin Box Description:

Golf as we know it today became popular in the late nineteenth century. St. Andrew's in Yonkers, NY was the first golf club in America in 1888 (with only three holes). The Chicago Golf Club was founded in 1893 and was the first 18 hole golf course. The oldest public golf course, the Van Courtland Golf Course, was founded in 1895 and is still in existence today in Bronx, NY.

Golf was known mostly as a man's sport, but it was also popular with the women of the 1890's. Some to the early golf board games depicted both men and women playing the game. Although the playing pieces are different from a century ago, the Game of Golf lithograph on this Vintage Game Tin is an original J.H. Singer box lid from the 1890's J.H. Singer produced games and toys in the 1890's and was noted for their colorful graphics. They were among a group of early American game manufacturers in New York that included McLoughin Brothers, Selchow and Righter, E.I. Horseman and Clark and Sowdon.
