Golf as we know it today became popular in the late nineteenth century.

(with only three holes). The Chicago Golf Club was founded in 1893 and
was the first 18 hole golf course.
The oldest public golf course, the Van Courtland Golf Course, was
founded in 1895 and is still in existence today in Bronx, NY.
Golf was known mostly as a man's sport, but it was also popular with
the women of the 1890's. Some to the early golf board games depicted
both men and women playing the game. Although the playing pieces are
different from a century ago, the Game of Golf lithograph on this
