Hop Off
Game
Description:
Object of the Game:
Each player will
toss the Hop Off! beanbag onto a target state determined by the draw of
a card by the team leader. Each player will hop to his or her
target state and retrieve the bean bag, naming each state along the way.
To win, your team must toss onto, and retrieve the Hop Off! beanbag from
each of the forty-eight contiguous states.
How to Play
Choose one person
to be the team leader. This player will draw the state cards for
each member of the team. Players must start form either the
Pacific or Atlantic Ocean sides of the Hop Off! game mat, with no more
than three players on a side.
-
The order of
play proceeds from the youngest player to the oldest. The team
leader draws a state card for the first player and tells the player
the name of the state. The player has three chances to toss
the Hop Off! beanbag onto that state on the Hop Off! game mat.
(If any portion of the beanbag is within the borders of the state,
the throw is considered "good".)
-
Once the player
has succeeded in throwing the beanbag onto the correct state, he or
she must hop to that state to retrieve the beanbag. The player
must begin hopping from either the Pacific or Atlantic Ocean, and
finish on the ocean on the opposite side. The first state on
which the player hops must be a state that borders the ocean from
which he begins. As the player hops across the map, he may not
hop on any state that is the same color as his target state,
however, the states on which he hops must border one another, and he
must correctly name each state on which he lands. He must
retrieve the beanbag from his target state only when he has landed
on a state that borders it. Hopping on the target state is
permissible, but in that case, it must also be named. A player
must hop on at least two states while hopping toward, and at least
two states while hopping from his target state.
-
At the end of a
player's turn, the card of the target state is put in the discard
pile.**
-
A player's turn
is over when:
a) He uses a hand or foot for balance, or if he falls down.
b) If, as he begins to hop to his target state, he fails to
hop from the ocean on which he begins to a state that borders that
ocean. The player must also finish hopping on a state that
borders the ocean on the opposite side from where he begins.
c) He misidentifies a state on which he lands.
**Although the
non-contiguous states of Alaska and Hawaii are shown on the Hop Off!
mat, they are not used in this game.
**If a player does not complete his turn successfully, the card is
returned to the draw pile.
