HOW TO PLAY -
BACK & FORTH
- GAME
RULES
Object: Score the most
points.
Set up:
-
Tear apart the cards and stack them up,
making sure the cards are all facing the same direction. Put them
in a pile in the center of the table, face down.
-
Place the stickers on the blank die to
create the "Color Die."
-
Everybody choose a colored Peg and place
it on "Start" on the Game Board.
-
Decide how many rounds you will play.
A good number to start with is three. This means each player will
have three turns to roll the dice. If you only have four players,
you may want to play more rounds.
Play:
-
Players take turns. If it's your
game, you go first.
-
On your turn, roll the dice.
-
The Color Die determines your Back & Forth
partner. Each player is represented by his or her Peg color.
If you roll your own color, or a color that is not being used, you get
to choose your partner.
-
Draw a card, and look at the numbered word
designated by the toll of the Standard Die.
-
Slide the card to your partner without
anybody else seeing it. Your partner should look at the word.
-
Begin the Back & Forth!
Here's how it works: You and your partner must form a sentence
describing the Target Word, but you must take turns saying words.
Okay. The Target Word is "Banana." Let's say you're Red and
your partner is Blue. Here are two different examples. Its
your turn, Red, so you start the Timer and begin with the first word:
Red: This...
Red: Monkeys...
Blue: fruit...
Blue: like...
Red: has...
Red: to...
Blue: a...
OR
Blue: eat...
Red: slippery...
Red: this...
Blue: yellow...
Blue: yellow
Red: peel!
Red: fruit!
-
All the other players try to be first to
yell out "Banana!" Shout out as many guesses as you like, there's no
penalty for wrong answers. See scoring below.
-
Play passes to the left, so if you rolled
the dice on the last turn, the player to your left goes next.
-
Continue playing this way, taking turns,
choosing partners, and scoring.
-
If a form of the Target Word is given, the
players can decide if it's acceptable. For example, if the Target
Word is "speeding" and somebody shouts out "speed" we think it's an
acceptable answer. You make the decision when you need to.
The Time Factor
The Timer lasts about 20 seconds. Any of the guessing players
should keep an eye on it.
Scoring
-
If you beat the Timer, you, your partner
and the first player to say the Target Word all score. You each
move ahead one space on the Game Board.
-
If you don't beat the Timer, you and your
partner move one space backward.
-
If you're on the Start space and you don't
beat the Timer, lucky for you that you can't get any farther back!
Particulars of Back & Forth™
-
You must for a sentence. If
you and your partner just shout out words that are associated with the
Target Word, you lose your turn.
-
Hit a dead end?
If you're in the middle of a sentence
description that is hopeless, either partner can start over by saying,
"New Sentence." The Timer, however keeps going.
-
No talking before the play.
The two partners cannot discuss the Target Word or the sentence they're
going to make before starting.
-
Who shouted the Target Word first?
If you can't tell, the players in question roll the standard die.
Highest roll scores.
-
Oops! If either of the
partners says the Target Word, just the partner who actually said it
must move back one space, the turn ends, and play passes to the left.
Winning
After the set number of rounds, the player who is farthest up the
game path wins the game. In the case of a tie, two non-tied
players are chosen to partner up and describe a final Target Word.
The first of the tied players to guess correctly wins the game.
