Example Careers for Kids Construction Card:

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER

Learn About It!  A transportation engineer is a specialized civil engineer who designs and builds highways, subways and commuter rail lines.  Transportation engineers have special expertise in constructing underground tunnels.

Think About It!  One of the most amazing engineering feats in transportation history was the construction of the tunnel underneath the English Channel between France and England, completed in 1993.  The channel tunnel, often called the "chunnel," carries passengers on trains underwater at depths ranging from 56 to 131 feet below sea level.  When the two countries were building the tunnel, they each started at one end and met in the center of the channel.  The engineers used laser measuring techniques to ensure that the paths would match exactly in the middle.

Talk About It!  How can mass transportation systems help a community?  What do you think large cities like New York or London would be like without mass transit?

Do It!  Imagine that you are a transportation engineer working on a mini-subway system to transport students from their homes to school.  Draw a map that shows various routes your subway could take.
