LITERARY AGENT
Learn About It!
A literary agent represents an
author seeking a publisher for a book. The literary agent reads an
author's writing sample to determine if it has potential as a future
book. If the agent decides to represent the author, he or she will
contact publishers directly to sell the author's manuscript and to
negotiate a contract. It is in the literary agent's best interest
to represent authors who publish successful books since the agent
usually receives a percentage of an author's profit.
Think About It! Most books
editors receive many more manuscripts than they ever can possibly read.
A literary agent can help an author break through to a publisher if the
agent has a good reputation or a prior working relationship with a
publisher. In fact, some publishing companies even refuse to read
submissions from authors without literary agents.
Talk About It! Besides
finding a publisher and negotiating a contract, in what other ways do
you think literary agents can help authors? How could a literary
agent help if an author were to have a dispute with a publisher?
Do It! Imagine that you are a
literary agent searching for new authors to represent. Visit the
library and examine some books for kids your age. Select a few
authors whom you would like to represent. What do you like about
their works?
