Brainstorming Fun
How many more Community Helpers can you add to the deck?
Brainstorm other community helpers and research information about those
careers. Make your own cards out of blank flash cards or heavy
paper, and add tem to the deck.
Helper Sort
Stack the Community Helper cards picture side up. Draw one
card at a time, sorting the cards into groups. Invent your own
groups or try these: people who wear uniforms, people who work mostly
outside, people who give help to those in need of care.
Tools of the Trade
Divide the deck into two stacks: the Community Helper cards and the
Tool cards. Shuffle each deck. Match each Helper to the
Tools of his or her trade.
Who am I?
Randomly pick up a card from the Community Helpers deck.
Players can only ask you yes or no questions to identify the Community
Helper.
Careers from A to Z
Make your own alphabet book using all the letters of the alphabet.
Begin by drawing someone in a career beginning with the letter A and
then listing some of the duties that are required in the career.
Try thinking of some unusual careers such as alligator hunter, ant
farmer, or apple picker. Then continue with the next letter.
My Own Community Helpers
Make your own flash cards illustrating family and friends' careers.
Ask each person what he or she likes about the job, its requirements,
duties and tools. Then draw a picture of the person doing his or
her job on a blank flash card or heavy paper. Write the job name
and some of its requirements, duties, and tools below the picture.
It will be fun to post your flash cards on the refrigerator and see how
many different community helpers you know.
Charades
Put all the Community Helper cards in a bag. Ask one person to
draw a card from the bag and act out the career without speaking.
See how quickly you can guess the career. As a variation, you
could have the person draw pictures of the tools used in the career.
Use the pictures as clues to guess the career.
