HOW TO PLAY - COODJU LITE
- GAME
RULES
Objective: Collect all 5
Spelling Twists first and you win the game!
Setting Up:
-
Split into 2 teams and decide which
team will play first.
-
Everyone must choose one side of the
Spell Cards to read from for the entire game: the orange side or the
green side first.
-
Take the TWIST Cards and
PASSWORD! Cards out of the card file. Give one team the
green TWIST and PASSWORD! Cards and the other team the
orange ones. Lay these cards out in front of each team.
Playing the Game:
-
The first team to play picks one
player to be the Reader. The other teammates are the
Spellers (you should switch Readers each round so everyone gets
a chance to read and spell).
-
The Reader spins the Coodju Spinner to
get the team's Spelling Twist for the round.
-
The Reader draws a Spell Card from the
card file making sure his or her teammates cannot see the words on
the card.
-
When everyone is ready, the opposing
team flips the timer and the Reader reads one word at a time to each
of his or her teammates. As each word is read to a teammate,
he or she will, in turn, try to spell that word according to the
round's Spelling Twist. Writing is not allowed.
-
If a teammate spells a word correctly,
the Reader moves on to the next word and the next teammate. If
the team spells all of the words on the card correctly, they grab
the TWIST Card for the Spelling Twist just completed
and their turn is over.
For example, if the Spelling Twist is VOWELS, and a team
correctly spells only the vowels in each word on the card, they
collect the VOWELS Card from the set of TWIST Cards laid out
in front of them.
-
If a teammate spells a word
incorrectly, the Reader should read the same word to each of his or
her other teammates, one at a time, until one of them spells it
correctly.
-
If no one spells the word correctly,
after everyone has had one chance, that word is considered missed
and the team's turn is over. Well, not really... a team can
use one of its PASSWORD! Cards to skip the missed word and
finish spelling the rest of the card! To use a PASSWORD!
Card, shout, "PASSWORD," grab one of the PASSWORD! Cards
laid out in front of your team and toss it into the game box.
-
If the time expires before the team
completes spelling a card, their turn is over.
-
After a team's turn is over, the
opposing team gets a chance to spin the spinner, read and spell.
Note: If a team spins a Spelling Twist they have
already collected, they must still play the round according to that
Twist. If they spell all of the words correctly, they
win a chance to play for a Twist Card they don't have.
Then, using a new Spell Card, the team gets another 45 seconds to
try and collect the new Twist Card.
Winning:
The first team to collect all 5 of their
Twist Cards wins the game!
Spelling Twists
Forward: Spell every word
forward.
Example: If the Reader says, "play," the Speller should answer,
"p-l-a-y."
Vowels: Spell only the vowels
in every word (in the order they appear).
Example: If the Reader says, "nice," the Speller should answer, "i-e."
Remember: Y is a vowel when it makes
a vowel sound as in try, fly, empty, puppy, or when it combines with
another vowel to make a vowel sound as in stay, clay, boy, joy, key, and
money. To simplify play, make "y" a vowel for the entire game.
Consonants: Spell only the
consonants in every word (in the order they appear). Example: If
the reader says "true," the Speller should answer, "t-r."
Remember: Y is a consonant when it
comes at the beginning of words such as yes and yet or makes a consonant
sound as in beyond or rayon. To simplify play, make "y" a vowel
for the entire game.
First & Last Letter: Spell
only the first letter and last letter in every word.
Example: If the Reader says, "uncle," the Speller should answer,
"u-e."
Skip A Letter:
Starting with the first letter, spell
every other letter in each word. Example: If the Reader
says, "head," the Speller should answer, "h-a."
2-Player Game:
Players take turns being the Reader and
Speller each round. When the Speller spells an entire card
correctly, he or she grabs the TWIST Card for that Spelling
Twist. The first player to collect all 5 of his or her
TWIST Cards wins the game!
Playing Tips:
-
Since some words sound the same,
but are spelled differently, the Reader can use sentences to
clarify their meanings. For example, if the word is,
"PEAR," the Reader can say, "PEAR, like the fruit..."
-
As a word is read from the card,
all teammates should be prepared to spell that word in case it
is passed on to them.
-
Don't spend too much time on a
word if a teammate is having trouble with it. Quickly move
to the next teammate or use a PASSWORD! Card, if your
team has any left.
-
Teams should spread the use of
their PASSWORD! Cards over the entire game.
-
Don't forget that you can use
PASSWORD! Cards to pass the last word on a card. This
is especially useful when time is about to run out!
More Challenging Play:
-
If you're playing with the orange
side, switch to the more challenging green side.
-
Try using only one PASSWORD!
Card per game. Then, try using no PASSWORD! Cards
in a game.
-
Spell 2 cards in a single
45-second round to collect each TWIST Card.
