HOW TO PLAY - DEPARTMENT STORE MATH
GAME
RULES
To Play:
Have each player select a marker
and place it on Start.
Give each player a Shoppers' Guide and
$300.00. Designate one player to serve as the salesclerk.
The salesclerk will make change and be in charge of all purchases.
Spin the spinner to determine the order of
play. The person who spins the highest number in the inner circle
plays first. Play then moves to the left.
Player No. 1 spins the spinner. The
number in the inner circle determines the number of spaces the marker is
to be moved clockwise on the game board. The number in the inner
circle also indicates the page number in the Shoppers' Guide where a
purchase is to be made.
After moving the marker to the appropriate
space, Player No. 1 spins the spinner again to determine which item to
purchase. This is indicated by the number in the outer circle.
In each turn, players are to follow the
instructions on the space in which they land. If the marker is
moved to a 'Spin and Shop' space, the spinner is spun a second time to
determine which purchase is to be made from the Shoppers' Guide.
Example:
If a 5 is spun on the spinner, the
player moves the marker clockwise five spaces from Start and lands on
the space which reads 'Gift Certificate Collects $5.00'. The
player turns to page 5 in the Shoppers' Guide. The player would
first collect $5.00 as indicated by the Gift Certificate space, then the
spinner would be spun a second time to determine which item on page 5 is
to be purchased.
If the spinner lands on "3" in the outer
circle, the Redwood Basket on page 5 would be purchased for $11.47.
If a player moves to a space labeled
"Special Purchase", the number in the inner circle is used to determine
the page number and the Special on that page is purchased.
Players alternate turns until the game is
completed. The length of the game may be controlled by following
one of these suggestions:
-
The game may end when one player's
marker has been moved once around the board.
-
The game ends when on player's
money has been spent.
-
The game may end after a
designated period, such as 20 or 30 minutes.
-
The game ends after a designated
number of turns per player.
The winner is the one
with the most money when the game
is completed.
