HOW TO PLAY - GEO SHAPES
- GAME
RULES
GeoShapes™
Rules
-
Players:
For 2 to 4, Ages and Up
-
Object of Game: Be the first to
complete one geometric figure out of two in a chosen quadrant, plus
the circle in the corner of that quadrant. The figures and
circles are completed by filling them in with GeoShapes.
-
Quadrant Selection: Each player
chooses a quadrant to play.
-
Dealing Cards and GeoShapes:
Select one player to be the dealer. Thoroughly shuffle the
cards before each game. Dealing to the left, the dealer gives
each player a total of four cards. After the cards are dealt,
all players turn their cards face up and the dealer exchanges the
cards for the GeoShapes pictured on the cards. The players
keep their GeoShapes off the board until their play. The
dealer places all of the exchanged playing cards face up in the area
in the center of the board marked DISCARDS and places the remaining
cards face down in the area marked DRAW CARDS.
-
Playing the Game: The player on
the dealer's left makes the first play. Each players, during
his or her turn may do one of three things:
A. Draw one
card and place it face up on the playing card DISCARDS area. The
dealer then gives the player the GeoShape pictured on the card.
The player may piece as many GeoShapes as he or she wishes on one of the
two large figures in his or her quadrant, but not on both figures.
In addition, a player can place GeoShapes on the circle during each
play. (As a challenging option, players are not required to play
any GeoShapes on the board during their turn. This maneuver of
finesse keeps opponents guessing; it forces them to keep track of
GeoShapes held off the board). At the end of the play, a player
must discard one GeoShape and place it in the appropriate SHAPE DISCARDS
area on the board.
B. Pick up an
entire stack of discarded GeoShapes (either his her own or another
player's). A player may then make a play as described in 5A.
At the end of the play, a player must discard one GeoShape and place it
in his or her SHAPE DISCARDS area on the board. (NOTE: Players
quickly team that they must occasionally pick up a stack of discarded
GeoShapes to be competitive.)
C. Offer to
trade GeoShapes (either in hand or on the board) with another player.
No more than three GeoShapes may be offered in exchange for up to three
GeoShapes. A player may then make a play as described in 5A.
At the end of the play after a trade, a player does not discard a
GeoShape. If the player's opponent refuses to trade, the player
then chooses either 5A or 5B to complete the turn.
6. Discarding
GeoShapes: At the end of any play (other than a trade), the player
must discard a GeoShape. If a player has placed all the GeoShapes
in his or her hand (off the board) onto the board, he or she must remove
a GeoShape either from a figure or a circle in the quadrant they are
playing in order to discard a GeoShape. At the end of the game,
the winner must have a GeoShape in his or her hand to discard after
completing one figure and the circle in the quadrant.
7. Switching Figures: A
player may choose to switch the figure in the quadrant that he or she is
attempting to complete during any of his or her plays. (Ex.
switching from fig. A to B). In this event, all GeoShapes must be
removed from the first figure before any can be played on the second
figure.
8. Play Restriction: A
GeoShape cannot be played on a figure unless it will fit as part of that
completed figure. For example, the Trapezoid will fit inside the
perimeters of several figures but would make it impossible to complete
the figure because of its dimensions.
9. Wild Shapes: A Wild
Shape is used in the same manner as a joker in a card game. (A
joker can be substituted for any card in the deck.) The red Wild
GeoShape square can be placed on the board, substituting for any
GeoShape. As an example, there are only one Equilateral Triangle
in the GeoShapes deck, but two places that it can be used on the board.
If the existing Equilateral Triangle has already been played, a Wild
Shape could be placed on the board in place of the Equilateral Triangle.
Together with the Trapezoid, this Wild Shape would be complete.
10.
Winner: The winner is the first player to obtain the objectives of
the game as stated in Rule #2. The winner is awarded 25 points
plus the point value of all GeoShapes which he or she holds in hand and
did not play on the board. Each GeoShape has its point value noted
on the face of the piece.
11.
Penalties: All the other players are penalized the point value of
all GeoShapes they hold in hand and did not play on the board.
12. Scoring
GeoShapes: A piece of paper with the players' names on it can be
used to score GeoShapes (See #10 and #11). Alternatives to using
points as the scoring rule are up to the players' imaginations. As
as example, two players might say that the winner will be the player to
win two out of three games, regardless of the point spread.
Optional
Two Player-Half Board Play
Quadrant
Selection: Two players may choose to each play half of the board,
completing one figure in each of two adjoining quadrants, plus the two
corresponding circles on that side of the board to win.
Dealing Cards
and GeoShapes: Two players who are playing two quadrants apiece
(half of the board) receive eight cards each.
Playing the
Game:
A) In case of a player playing half of the board, he or she may
place GeoShapes on one figure in each of the two adjoining quadrants as
well as both circles in the half of the board. Half board players
may discard one GeoShape in either SHAPE DISCARDS area of their two
quadrants.
B) Half board players pick up the entire stack of discarded
GeoShapes from both SHAPE DISCARDS areas (either from his or her own two
quadrants or the opponent's two quadrants).
