HOW TO PLAY -
GRAMMAR MANIA!
- GAME
RULES
How to Play:
1) Determine which level, I, II, or III, is to be played.
Place the 'Chance' cards face down in the area marked 'Chance Cards' on
the gameboard. Each player selects a pawn and places it on one of
the four 'Chance' spaces. Determine order of play by spinning the
spinner - highest number in the blue region (numerals 1-6) goes first.
2) The first player spins the
spinner and moves the number of spaces indicated in the blue region.
A. If the player lands on any
of the spaces labeled: adverb or adjective, comparison or
superlative, gerund or infinitive, mystery, noun, question,
preposition, subject verb agreement, or verb, then he/she
spins the spinner again to determine which question (1-30) to answer
under that heading in the sentence booklet. Headings are
alphabetical.
EXAMPLE: If the player
is playing with the Level I sentences and lands on an 'Adverb or
Adjective' space then spins '17', an opposing player would turn to
sentence #17 under 'Adverb or Adjective' in the Level I section and read
it aloud: "MeiTing takes rarely taxi to school." The player would
then have one minute to attempt to say the sentence correctly so that
all players could hear. In this case, the correct sentence would
read "MeiTing rarely takes a taxi to school." (word
order, article) The player's answer is checked against the
corrected sentence in the Sentence Answer Booklet. The errors are
described parenthetically after each corrected sentence. If the
player only corrects the error relating to the space heading type (ie:
Adjective or Adverb) he/she earns one point. If the sentence has
more than one error and the entire sentence is corrected two points are
earned. There is always at least one error related to the heading
type and often errors of other types.
B. If the player lands on a
Mystery space, follow the example above, but the player is given only
thirty (30) seconds and must correct the entire sentence. If the
player is successful, he/she earns ten (10) points. If not, no
points are earned.
C. If the player lands on
Detention Room, the player loses five (5) points and his/her turn unless
the player is holding an Avoid Detention, chance card. If so, the
player spins and moves again. No points are deducted.
D. If the player lands on
Chance, the player draws a chance cards and follows the instructions.
Chance cards are discarded face-down to a discard pile near the game
board.
E. If the player lands on
Tongue Twister, the player is given thirty seconds to say the past and
past participle form of a set of five irregular verbs found on the
Tongue Twister Irregular verbs sheet located in the instruction booklet.
First the player spins using the inner blue ring of the spinner to
determine which group, even or odd, will be used. The player then
spins again to determine which group of verbs, 1-30, to use. An
opposing player then reads aloud each irregular verb while the player
responds verbally with he past and past participle form of the verbs..
If the player names all irregular verbs correctly, he/she remains on the
space and earns five points. Otherwise, the player remains on the
space and no points are earned.
3) Play moves clockwise to
the next player. Play continues until one player has collected a
predetermined number of points, until a certain time limit has been
reached, or until a certain number of trips around the board have been
accomplished. In the last two cases, the player with the highest
number of points at the end of the game wins.
