HOW TO PLAY - GREAT STATES JUNIOR- GAME RULES

Game Number 1-

Object of the Game:
To have the most chance cards at the end of the game.

Before you begin:
Place the game board on the table where all players can see it.  Shuffle the 3 sets of chance cards (shape, name & picture) and place them face down next to the game board, within reach of all players.  Players choose their playing figures and place them on the starting space with the American flag.

Playing the game:
The youngest player starts the game.  On your turn, roll the die and move your playing figure counterclockwise to the next colored space that matches the color you rolled.  Now, draw the top card from the chance card pile that also matches this color and hand it to the player on your left.  This player sets the timer to 30 seconds, and then shows you the chance card.

If you chose a blue chance card- the card shows an outline picture of a state.  Hurry to find the matching outline, thereby finding the state, on the game board.

If you chose a white chance card- the card shows a picture of an object.  Hurry to find the matching picture on the board, thereby finding the sate where this object is located.

If you chose a red chance card- the card shows a letter or word.  Hurry to find the state or states whose name begins with this letter or word.  (The card also shows you how many you must find.)

If the timer stops before you can find the match, the chance card is placed on the bottom of the pile and your turn is over.

If you find the match before the timer stops, the player on your left checks to be sure you are correct (all the answers are written on the bottom of the cards.)  If you are, you get to  keep the card.  If you are wrong, the card is returned to the bottom of the pile.

It is the next player's turn.

Rolling the Star:
When you roll a star, you move your playing figure ahead to the next star space.  You may choose a chance card from any of the 3 piles.  As above, the time is set, you look for the match.  If you are correct, you keep the card.  Other wise the card is placed on the bottom of the pile.

Winning the game:
When a player has gone completely around the game board trail, and the roll of his die lands him either on or past the flag starting space, the game is over.  This player gets to try to win one more chance card.  Then all players count the chance cards they've won.  Whoever has the most wins!

Variation of Play:
The game is played as above, but the following rules are added.

1. When you roll the die and land on a space occupied by another player, you can take one of his/her chance cards.

2. When any player lands on a star space, all players get to participate in winning the card.  The player whose playing figure landed on the space gets to choose the category.  The card is drawn and the timer is set.  Then the card is turned over.  All players, at once, try to find the match to the card.  Whoever is the first to find it, points to it and shouts, "FOUND IT!"
If the player is correct, he/she gets to keep the card.  If incorrect, the card is returned to the bottom of the pile.  It is the next player's turn.

Game Number 2-

Object of the Game:
To be the first one to reach the finish line.

On your turn roll the die and move your playing figure counterclockwise to the next colored space that matches the color you rolled.  Now, draw the top card from the chance card pile that also matches this color and hand it to the player on your left.  This player sets the timer to 30 seconds, and then shows you the chance card.

Following the directions shown on Game #1 describing the chance cards, if you are successful in finding the match on the game board before the timer runs out, you can move your playing figure ahead 3 spaces.

If you are unable to find the shape, picture or name before the timer goes off, then you must move back 3 spaces.  If you are less than 3 spaces from "start", then you move back to start.

It is the next player's turn.

As the game progresses, players who are successful in locating objects on the map game board move ahead on the trail, as those who do not have success, have to move backwards.

Rolling the Star:
If you roll the star, you may choose a chance card from any of the 3 piles.  If you are successful in finding the match on the board, you can move your playing figure to the next star space.  If you are at the end of the trail and the finish is before the next star space, then you move to the finish line.

Landing on another player's space:
If, when you roll the dice, you move causes you to land on a space occupied by another player, both you and the player who is on the space participate in finding the match on the board.  The player who rolled the die decides which category card to draw.  The timer is set and both players hurry to find the match of the board.  Whoever is first to find it, points to it and shouts, "FOUND IT!!"  If the player is correct, he/she gets to move ahead 3 spaces.  The other player must move back 3 spaces!

Winning the game:
Whoever reaches or crosses the finish line first is the winner!

Note: The timer can be set for the full 60 seconds for younger players, or to just 15 for players who are ready for a challenge.
