HOW TO PLAY - HORSE SENSE - GAME
RULES
Object of the game:
Players move their horse game
pieces around the board, hoping to land
on a space that allows them to
choose a trivia question card. When
a question is correctly
answered, they can claim a section of the coveted
Blue Ribbon.
Whoever is the first to correctly answer 4 trivia questions,
one from
each of the 4 different categories, must hurry back to the barn
to claim
the prized ribbon. Beware of your opponents' horses! They
will
try to take your ribbons away!
Before you begin:
Place the game board in the center of the table where all players
can
reach it. Each player chooses a horse playing piece and
inserts it into
a game stand. The horses should be placed in the
barn, which is the
start position. Shuffle and place the 4
categories of the trivia question
cards on the game board where
indicated. Punch out and place the
4 red ribbon pieces next to one
set of question cards in one corner
of the board. Punch out and
place the 4 yellow ribbon pieces next
to another set of questions, the 4
blue ribbon pieces next to another,
and the 4 circular ribbon pieces
next to the last set.
Playing the game:
The youngest player begins by rolling the die and moving his/her
horse playing piece the number spaces indicated. Once you move
out
of the barn, you can proceed in any direction, toward any of the
4
circular sections on the board. However, you can only move in
one
direction per turn.
-As player's travel the board, they attempt to land on the purple spaces
in each area of the board. When they do, they are allowed to
choose
a trivia card representing the subject category in that section
and pass it
to the player on their right, who reads them the true/false
or multiple-choice
question.
If, on your turn, you answer the question incorrectly, your turn is over
and you do not earn a ribbon. If, however, you answer the question
correctly, you claim one of the ribbon pieces adjacent to the category's
trivia cards in that section of the board. Your turn is now over.
On your
next turn, you should travel to another section of the board,
hoping to be
the first to travel to all 4 areas, correctly answering 4
trivia questions,
one for each of the categories.
If you get a trivia question wrong, on your next turn you can either try
to land on a purple space in that same section, or travel to another
section
hoping to be able to correctly answer a question there.
However you
choose to proceed, your ultimate goal is to land on purple
spaces in all
4 sections, correctly answer the category's trivia
questions, and collect
all 4 pieces of the ribbon. As you collect
pieces of the ribbon, assemble
them so when you have all 4 pieces, if
forms the coveted First Place
Ribbon (as shown on the bottom of the game
box).
The Trivia Cards:
The 4 categories of trivia cards are filled with fun facts about
horses
- facts about caring for the, riding them, about the anatomy of a
horse,
and the different horse breeds. In each set of cards there
are also
"wild cards," which can either bring you good luck or bad!
Landing on occupied spaces:
If, on your turn, your horse lands on the same space as an
opponent's
horse, you can send your opponent back to the barn!
He/she must
immediately move to the start position. (He/she can
keep any ribbon
pieces collected.)
Note: This is not always a penalty for your opponent, but may, in
fact,
help him. When you roll the die, you must use strategy to
decide if you
should land on a space occupied by an opponent or choose
to proceed
in another direction.
Landing on a Horse Shoe Space:
When you land on a space that has a horseshoe, you can challenge
any
other player. Choose whom you will challenge, choose a trivia
question from any of the 4 categories, and read it to that player.
If the
question is answered incorrectly, you can take any ribbon piece
from
that player. If the player answers correctly, he/she then
gets to challenge
you! Another trivia card is chosen and you must
answer the question.
If you answer correctly, you are safe.
However, if you answer incorrectly,
he/she can take any ribbon piece
from you.
(When challenging, if you select a Wild Card, instead of challenging
your
opponent, follow the instructions on the card. For
instance, if you are
challenging another player and the card you choose
says "Take a red ribbon
piece from any other player;" you simply follow
the instructions and take
a red ribbon from any other player. The
player you chose to challenge
does not have to answer a question.)
Once you have completed your turn, play passes to the left.
Note: When one of your opponents has claimed all 4 parts of the ribbon
and is heading back to the barn in order to win, you should, on every
turn,
try to land on a horseshoe space, so you can challenge this player
and
hopefully take a ribbon piece away from him.
Winning the game:
Once you have collected all 4 parts of the coveted first place
ribbon,
you must quickly return to the barn. Beware- while you are
attempting
to get back to the barn, you can be challenged by another
player who
lands on a horseshoe space. If you are successful in
reaching the barn
with all 4 ribbon parts, you are the WINNER!
Variation of play:
For a quicker game, the winner only has to earn any 2 pieces of the
ribbon and return to the barn in order to win.
For a more challenging game, players must answer 2 trivia questions
correctly to earn each piece of ribbon. When you land on a purple
space,
you must answer 2 questions. If you get both right, you may
claim the
appropriate ribbon piece. If you only get 1 answer
right, you can keep
the question card you correctly answered. Next
time you land on a purple
space in this particular section, you only
need to answer 1 question
correctly. When you do, you can hand in
your other trivia card, proving
you have answered 2 questions correctly.
When you can claim your ribbon
piece. Whoever is the first to
correctly answer 8 questions, 2 for each
category, thus earning the 4
ribbon pieces, must quickly return to the barn
to win the game.
