My Food Factory Instructions
Players or
Teams: 2
Grades:
5 & Up
Aim of the Game:
The object of My Food Factory is to obtain Identification
Cards having to do with the digestive system, followed by the
corresponding Fact Cards. The winner is the player that collects the
most pairs of matching Fact Cards.
Introduction:
My Food Factory
is an interesting and instructive
environment for acquiring and understanding of the human digestive
system, its parts and their functions. Food Travels through this system,
so additional attention is given to good and poor nutrition. The study
of systems is emphasized in both state and national life science
standards.
My Food Factory offers three stages
of learning- Medical Student, Medical Intern, and Physician- that allows
students at any level to play. Each stage is defined by how often a
player may refer to the Medical Guide and the order in which ID and Fact
Cars may be obtained.
The 14 ID cards correspond with 56 Fact
Cards, grouped in sets of four. The Fact Cards contain a wealth of
information about the parts of the digestive system, as well as
nutrition. Communicating this information to others plays a central role
in the game. Categories include:
Digestive System - Stomach - Tongue - Gall
Bladder
Pharnyx & Esophagus - Kidneys - Teeth -
Good Nutrition
Salivary Glands - Small Intestine -
Liver - Poor Nutrition
Pancreas - Large Intestine
Kidneys, although part of the excretory
system, are included because their function is closely connected with
how food is processed by the body.
Set Up:
1. Thoroughly mix the Fact Cards and place
face down on a stack.
2. Each Player should spread a set of ID
Cards face up next to the game board.
3. Spine to determine the order of play.
Highest number plays first.
4. Place pawns on Start.
How To Play -Level 1:
Medical Student 1. At the beginning of the game, provide each
player with the Medical Guide. It may be consulted at any time.
2. Each player, in turn, spins and moves
clockwise the number of spaces shown.
3. If the space contains the description
of a part of the digestive system or nutritional information, claim the
appropriate ID Card. Then collect the number of Fact Cards the space
indicates and read them to the other players.
4. The ID Cards and Fact Cards may be
collected in any order.
5. The game is over and the winner
declared when one player collects all 14 ID Cards, although the other
player should finish the round if he or she has not yet had a turn. In
the case of a tie, the winner is the player with the most matching pairs
of Fact Cards.
Level 2: Medical Intern,
and Level 3: Physician
1. At the Medical Intern level,
provide each player with the Medical Guide and place face down. It may
be consulted only once during each trip around the board.
At the Physician level, players may not consult the Medical Guide
at
any time. They must rely on what they have previously learned about the
digestive system.
2. Each player spins and moves clockwise
the number of spaces shown.
3. If the space contains the description
of a part of the digestive system or nutritional information, claim the
appropriate ID Card. Then collect the number of Fact Cards the space
indicates and read them to the other players.
4. An ID Card must be obtained before the
related Fact Cards can be collected. If a Fact Card is not related to an
ID Card already in hand, it must be put face down in a second pile to
the side of the board. Players draw from this pile when all the other
cards have been drawn.
5. The game ends when all the 56 cards
have been distributed . The player who collects the most pairs of
matching Fact Cards is the winner. If all four Fact Cards of a given set
are collected, it counts as two pairs.
6. In case of a the winner is the player
with the most ID Cards. If there is still a tie the winner is the player
with the most individual Fact Cars.
Teachers may expand the impact of My
Food Factory in several ways.
1. Copy set of cards, four cards to a
page. Give the pages to each student or student group for study and
discussion. Encourage students to find additional information on the
internet.
2. Give each or several students one of
the ID Cards (except for Good Nutrition, Poor Nutrition, and the
Digestive System). Have the students line up in the order in which the
digestive system parts process food, beginning with the teeth and ending
with the large intestine Ask each player to describe the job of his or
her organ.
3. Stimulate student thinking about a
future career by having them research and report on the role of a nurse,
a physician, or another kind of healthcare professional. They should
also learn what kind of training is necessary for those jobs. A medical
career is humanitarian, highly-respected, and usually well paying.
Science Standards
My Food Factory supports state and
national science standards. You are encouraged to correlate the game's
content with the life science standards of your state. For comparison

Standards)
Key Objectives:
-Human beings have systems for digestive,
excretion, circulation, respiration, and other functions. These systems
interact with each other.
-Each part within a system performs a job.
-In the digestive system, food is broken
down and the nutrients are absorbed and transported to cells. The
excretory system eliminates the indigestible parts of food.
-Nutrition affects health. Recommendations
for good nutrition include eating a wide variety of foods and moderating
the intake of sugar, salt, and fat. |
