HOW TO PLAY - SPUTNIK GAME- GAME
RULES
Object Of The Game:
To put your opponent's rockets out of action by preventing them from
moving.
Setting Up:
Each player chooses a rocket and places it on the launch pad of the
same colour. The launch pads, rockets and galaxies are set up on
the playing board as indicated in Figure 1, according to the number of
players.
How To Play:
A draw determines which player starts, then players take turns to
play clockwise. On each turn, each player must do two things: move
his rocket and remove an uninhabited galaxy from the playing board.
- Moving the rockets
On each turn, each player must move his rocket to a galaxy or to the
launch pad next to the galaxy it has landed on (Fig. 3).
Rockets cannot land on empty squares on the playing board, or on
galaxies or launch pads occupied by another rocket (Fig. 4).
- Disappearance/Extinction of Galaxies
After moving his rocket, the player can remove an uninhabited galaxy of
his choice from the playing board. The aim is to restrict or
prevent your opponent from moving. Playing cannot remove any
occupied galaxy or any launch pad, whether or not it is occupied, from
the playing board.
Remark: At the beginning of the game, when the player has not yet left
his original launch pad, the galaxies adjacent to the launch pad cannot
be removed.
Launch pads come to the rescue of rockets:
During the game, each launch pad can be used to help the
corresponding rocket once only. For example, the blue launch pad
can come to the blue rocket's rescue: the blue player decides to move
his launch pad to an empty square next to his rocket. He turns
over his launch pad so that the galaxy side is visible, then he places
his rocket on it (Fig. 5). When turned over, launch pads are the
same as ordinary galaxies and can subsequently be removed by any player.
When a player uses his launch pad in this way, his turn is complete
after he has moved his rocket (in this case only, he does not remove a
galaxy).
Winning the Game:
Any player unable to move his rocket on his turn is eliminated from
the game (Fig. 6): his rocket is removed form the game.
The last player left in the game when all the others have been
eliminated is the winner.
Alternatives:
With 2 or 3 players, it is possible to play with several rockets
each.
With 4 players, it is possible to play in teams of 2.
