HOW TO PLAY - ZIP AROUND MONEY- GAME
RULES
Rules:
Distribute the cards randomly,
one per player. Remember, every card must be used, so some players
may get two cards.
Before beginning a round, decide if
questions A, B, C, or D will be used and then stick to those questions
until the end of the round. For instance, if the teacher announces
that question A will be used today, then each player will read only
question A when his or her turn comes up.
The game is begun by selected player
reading what is on his or her card. "I had 3 nickels and spent six
cents. How much is left?" The holder of card number 9 then
answers, "Nine cents is left," and reads the question on his card: "I
had 3 dimes and spent 7 cents. How much is left?" The hold
of card number 23 answers, "Twenty-three cents is left," and reads
the question on his or her card. The game continues until every
player reads a card. When the question arises to which the person
who began the round must respond, every player will have read a card,
the the round has ended.
Variations:
1. The teacher may elect to switch levels at one or more
points in the game. This keeps the players who have already
answered alert.
2. ZIP AROUND Money can also be used by a single player who
arranges the cards in order by solving the problems. Since the
last card returns the player to the first card, thus completing the
cycle, this activity is self-correcting.
Helpful Hints:
The teacher should roam around the room to help insure attentiveness
and to give help to those players who cannot get the answers on their
own. This keeps the game moving and saves shy players from
embarrassment.
If interest begins to lag, put some spark
into the game by playing against the clock. Keep track of the time
needed to complete a round each day and try to shorten it the next time.
