Lewis & Clark Puzzle Description:
In 1803, at the urging of President Thomas Jefferson, Congress funded
the "Lewis & Clark Expedition" to find the "Northwest Passage," the
fabled
water route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The expedition
of 45 men left St. Charles, Mo on May 19, 1804, heading up the
Missouri River. Slowed by the scale and harsh environment they
encountered, their journey took them over 2 years to complete.
Their goal was not realized, as there is no water route connecting the
Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, but their journey was still very
significant.
The west was no longer a mystery to Americans and their expedition
fueled the American dream of exploration that lasted more than 200
years.
The images seen in this puzzle are form a collection of 84 paintings
by artist R. L. Richards. He spent over 23 years researching the journey
of Lewis and Clark and bringing it to life in his paintings.
