DID YOU KNOW?
Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian patriot, stole the Mona Lisa from the
Louvre
Museum in Paris during August of 1911. Peruggia's motive was misguided:
he thought the French robbed the Mona Lisa from Italy. He didn't know
that Leonardo da Vinci himself sold it to King Francis I of France four
hundred years earlier (for 4,000 francs). Twenty-eight months later,
Peruggia smuggled the Mona Lisa to Florence. There, he offered to sell
it to art dealer Alfredo Geri for 5000,000 lira (about $1000,000). Geri
turned Peruggia over to the police. The Mona Lisa returned to the Louvre
and Peruggia stood trial for theft. The Italian public adored him for
his
patriotism and showered him with gifts. He was convicted but became
a free man before long.
