Help students master money
skills with these versatile, soft foam cubes. Set of 6 includes 3 cubes
with 1˘, 5˘, 10˘, 25˘, 50˘ and ˘ printed on them, and 3 cubes with $1,
$5, $10, $20, $50 and $. Roll the cubes, then add the values. Or, use
play money to represent the value rolled. Activity Guide included. Cubes
measure 1 5/8".
Money Add Up
In a small group give students two cubes, one with cent values and one
with dollar values. Have the students roll the cubes and write down the
value shown. Then have them roll the cubes a second time at write down
that value. Next, have them ass the two values together to find the
total.
If a $ or cent sign is rolled, have them make up a value to use. Repeat
this activity, but this time have the students subtract the two values
that
are rolled.
For a game, divide the class into teams. Roll the cubes once to give
them the starting value and then a second time to give them the value to
add or subtract. The first tem to come up with the correct answer
received one point. The first team to ten points or another specified
total wins. For an extra challenge, combine addition with subtraction
problems.
Finding Change
Give one cube with cent values and one cube with dollar values to a
small group of students. Have one student roll the set of cubes. Then
using the values shown, each student should list on a piece of paper all
the money combinations that can be used to come up with the total value
rolled (total value is $1.01. Possible answers could include: four
quarters and one penny; or three quarters, two dimes, one nickel, and
one penny. Have the most answers? Who had the most unique answer? Then
repeat the activity. This activity can also be done using school money.
Instead of writing down their answers, students should use the school
money to determine the ways the value rolled can be made.
