Collectable Dinosaurs!
Ankylosaurus:
(fused lizard)
30 feet long, 4 feet tall, weighed 3-4 tons.
Late Cretaceous - North America
The Ankyosaurus was the last of the armored dinosaurs, and was covered
from head to tail with this armor plating, two rows of spikes, and a
club-lie tail to defend it from carnivores (meat eaters). It even
had bony plates projecting its eyes! Flipping it over was the only
way to harm it, since it underbelly was unarmored. It was a
herbivore (plant eater), eating huge amounts each day to sustain its
large frame.
Stegosaurus
(covered lizard)
25-30 feet long
8-10 feet tall
weighed 3.5 tons
Late Jurassic Period - North America
The Stegosaurus was a large dinosaur, but had a small head with a brain
the size of a walnut! It had 17 large, bony plates in its back,
which were probably used to control its body temperature. It also
had spikes up to four feet long at the end of its flexible tail, which
were used to defend itself. It was a herbivore (plant eater), and
used its toothless beak to find large amounts of food to nourish its
massive frame.
Triceratops
(three-horned face)
30 feet long, 7 feet tall, weighed 6-12 tons.
Late Cretaceous - North America
The Triceratops had three long, sharp horns on its face, along with a
large shield of bone extending from the back of its skull. When
threatened by predators like the T. Rex, the Triceratops probably
charged into the enemy and used its horns to defend itself. These
dinosaurs were herbivores (plant eaters), and probably hatched from
eggs.
Styracosaurus
(spiked lizard)
17 feet long, 9 feet tall, weighed 3 tons
Late Cretaceous - North America
The Styracosaurus walked on four short legs, had a six-spiked frill on
the back of its skull, and a snout shaped like a parrot's beak. On
this snout was a horn that was nearly 2 feet long and 6 inches thick.
This horn may have been used for self-defense in charging into the
enemies like a rhinoceros. This herbivore (plant eater) lived in
herds and hatched from eggs.
Apatosaurus
(deceptive lizard)
70-90 feet long, 15-17 feet tall, weighed 33-38 tons.
Late Jurassic - North America
The Apatosaurus was once called the Brontosaurus, and was on of the
largest land animals to ever exist. It had a long neck and a long,
whip-like tail 50 feet long! It was a herbivore (plant eater), and
its long neck helped it to reach vegetation that other dinosaurs could
not. These dinosaurs hatched from enormous eggs, and may have
lived as long as 100 years!
Velociraptor
(speedy thief)
6 feet long, 3 feet tall, weighed 20-30 lbs.
Late Cretaceous - Mongolia, Russia and China
The Velociraptor was a fast, two-legged dinosaur, able to run up to 40
mph for short periods. This carnivore (meat eater) had razor-sharp
teeth, and a retractable 3.5 inch long claw on each foot which was its
main weapon. Velociraptors were considered the smartest dinosaurs,
which made them very dangerous predators. They may have hunted in
packs, attacking even much larger dinosaurs.
Pachycephalosaurus
(thick-headed lizard)
18 feet long, 10-feet tall, weighed 2 tons.
Late Cretaceous - North America and Mongolia
The
Pachycephalosaurus was a dome-headed dinosaur that lived in herds.
Its massive head housed an extremely thick skull, a tiny brain and large
eyes. Its skull was up to 10 inches thick, with a crown of spikes
and bumps. The thick skull may have enabled it to butt heads with
other dinosaurs without injuring its brain, or possibly to defend itself
by ramming its head into the soft stomachs of other dinosaurs. An
herbivore (plant eater), the Pachycephaolosaurus was the largest and
last of the "bone-head" family.
Tyrannosaurus
Rex
(tyrant lizard king)
40 feet long, 15-20 feet tall, weighed 5-7 tons
Late Cretaceous - North America and Asia
The Tyrannosaurus
Rex was one of the largest carnivores (meat eaters), walked on two
powerful legs, and had tiny arms with two fingers on each. It had
an enormous head with over 50 sharp, large, replaceable teeth up to 13
inches long, and powerful jaw muscles. The Tyrannosaurus Rex could
eat up to 400 lbs of meat in one bite! It is believed to have
reached speeds of up to 20 mph, which meant very few dinosaurs had a
chance of escape when in pursuit.
Parasaurolophus
(crested lizard)
35 feet long, 15 feet tall, weighed 3 tons.
Late Cretaceous - North America
The Parasaurolophus
was a duck-billed dinosaur with a large curved head crest on its head
that extended up to 6 feet long. This hollow crest was connected
to the nostrils and throat of the dinosaur, and may have allowed it make
very loud bellowing sounds that could have been heard for miles.
An herbivore (plant eater) with a toothless beak, it moved on two legs,
but may have used four to hunt for plants.
