David ROYFFE
A creative mind with a scientific bent
ESSEN, Game Fair, October 1993.
A very British gentleman
manning a 10 square metre stand
and hardly speaking a word of German, was beginning to
convince
the public to buy his game, a pyramid of balls. Among the
visitors
were two Frenchmen. They stopped, played for a moment,
then talked
aside for a couple of minutes before offering a
manufacturing
contract to a very surprised Brit! The contract between
David Royffe
and Gigamic was signed next morning. That is how
ELEVATION,
produced in a somewhat amateurish form by its creator,
became
PYRAOS (then PYLOS) and made its name in the games world.
But before that, David took 30 years to see his project
reach an
commercial level. His first model was made in 1964 with
the family's
snooker balls, and it's still in the family! What with his
mother's voluntary
work in a youth centre, his father's passion for anything
he could do with
his hands, his training with the British Aircraft
Corporation, the frequent
visits of his master chess playing friend and the many
games played
and invented with his brother and sister, it was
foreordained that
our British friend would move from practice to research,
and from
design to creation. His engineering studies sharpened his
analytical
mind and sense of detail, encouraging him to pursue his
obsession
with the three-dimensional validation of a game concept.
When he
finally achieved his end, his creative inspiration
remained alive.
Despite his absorbing job in electronic engineering, David
continues
to create highly innovative games and puzzles, working on
2 or 3 a year.
