Game
Description:
Quickword Game™ - Players of Quickword
participate in every turn in a race to complete their scorecard first.
To complete the scorecard, players must cross off each colored box by
winning a word game of that category.
In a turn a player
throws the die and moves the token around the board to select the game
category to be played by all players. Quickword contains four
different categories, each represented by a different color card.
Blue cards are straight race against the 90-second timer as players
write down as many words as they can within the chosen subject.
For example, if a
blue card says "List anything to do with FOOTBALL" players write down as
many things to do with football as they can. Easy you might say?
Here's the catch. You score a word if you are the only player to
have written it. If any other player writes the same word,
everyone crosses it off, and it does not count as a score. Thus,
you need to write down the easy ones, such as FOOTBALL, TOUCHDOWN, GOAL
POST, END RUN, FULLBACK, COACH AND so on to negate your opponents'
words, but you also need some less obvious words to garner points.
Whoever is left with the most points wins the round and can cross off
one of his or her scorecard boxes.
The idea that only
unique answers score really makes the game the fascinating contest it
is, as you must think fast, write quickly and come up with enough words
to outsmart your opponents.
Blue Cards
contain diverse subjects including "Anything found at a CIRCUS,"
"Anything associated with a LIBRARY," "DOG BREEDS," "ANIMALS found at a
ZOO," "CHEMICAL ELEMENTS," "MEMBERS OF CONGRESS," and so on.
Green cards are used three at a time, thus giving six topics, and
the spinner selects a letter. Players have to give one answer in
each category beginning with that letter. Unique answers are
critical to winning. For example, the letter L might come up on
the spinner, and the six categories might be "AUTHOR or POET," "WINE or
CHEESE," "BIRD," "CIVIL WAR GENERAL or STATES-MAN," "COOKING TERM," and
"SHAKES-PEARIAN CHARACTER." The answers could be LONGFELLOW,
LIMBURGER, LOON, LEE, LADLE and LEAR respectively.
Pink Cards
require players to come up with as many words as possible that start
with the letter indicated by the spinner and contain the two or more
letters shown on the card. Thus, if the letter selected by the
spinner is B and the card requires words that contain the letters E and
D in that order later in the word, but not words might be BED, BRED
BORED, BLEED, BOOK-END, BREAKDOWN and so on.
Oray cards
include several variations and degrees of difficulty. One group
requires six-letter words starting with the letter indicated by the
spinner. For example, if the word must start with B, there could
be BANNER, BOUNTY, BOWLER, BRANCH, and so on.
Another group
requires words containing the letter indicated by the spinner and
starting with letters designated on the card. For example, words
containing the letter M and starting with S would include SUM, SUMMER,
SOMEWHERE, SOMEHOW and so on.
A more difficult
group of gray cards requires players to make words that contain one
and/or both of the letters on either side of the spinner plus one or
more of the letters available only from the words designated on the
card. Thus, words with three or more letters containing the letter
L and/or G and containing any letters from the word PRAISE, might be
SLIP, LAP, LIP, RAIL, LAIR, GRAPE, GLARE, GRASP, GAPE, GAP, GALE, GRAIL
and so on. If the word on the card contains the same letter twice,
such CREASE, then the answer could be LEASE, LEER, or REEL and so on.
Quickword is a fast
and competitive words game that offers a variety of different
challenges, requires a little luck, involves strategy and locks players
in verbal combat. Quickword modestly describes itself as "The
ultimate word game." If it isn't, it's very close.
