It is important for students to have an
understanding of the notion of negative numbers so that they can apply
this concept to real world situations. For example, a negative number
can relate to the idea of having a negative amount in a bank account or
a negative temperature on a thermostat. When beginning to introduce
integers it is important for students to understand opposite terms, i.e.
- 4 and 4. They are opposite because they are both on different sides of
a number line and the same distance from zero. One tool that can be use
in demonstrating this concept is the representation of a number line.
