- To classify states according to given categories.
- To describe characteristics of selected states.
- Provide basic background information for extending activites.
Suggested Activities:
1. Bingo Game Flash Cards
Have student select 8 cards and lay them out in a 3 by 3 grid with
the center being a free space.
Read clues to students, such as:
- State that is larger than 250,000 square miles.
- State where they speak Spanish.
- State that entered the Union after 1945.
add other questions related to skills developed in other subject areas
as well.
2. Newspaper Connection
Students can locate stories from a selected state or region. This
could be a good homework assignment.
3. Alphabetizing
Make a list of states that begin with the letter A. Write their
capitals next to the state. For a smaller task, have students
alphabetize the states in a given region.
4. Plan A Trip By Flying
Select two state cards from the set. The first card is the starting
point, so write this state down first. The second card is the ending
state. Write all the states you will have to fly over to reach the
ending state. Make available one of the following: world map, atlas,
desk map, or some resources with the entire area shown. Example: the
first card selected is Maryland and the second is New York. One air
route would be Maryland to Pennsylvania to New York.
5. Race To The State
Place the cards in a pile. Select one card from the pile and
identify the state. Using a map, students locate the state identified on
the card. The first player to locate the state on the map or globe is
the winner and keeps the card. The player with the most cards wins the
game.
6. State Scrapbook
Assist the students in compiling a scrapbook of a state. This could
be a long-term project.
