World Class Football Game
Description:
OBJECTIVE
By playing World Class Football student will be able to:
1. reinforce recognition of commonly seen words
2. practice decoding skills
3. work to develop mastery of sight words for grades K-1
INTRODUCTION
High Frequency Sight Words are some of the most commonly used works in
the English language. Sight words are those words that students should
be able to instantly recognize. This is important in order to help in
allowing full comprehension of text that students read. Sight words are
made up of primarily pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions,
conjunctions, verbs, and 95 common nouns.
PLAYING WORLD CLASS FOOTBALL
Moves are made by players responding the the high frequency words on the
Playing Cards. Each player takes a turn flipping a card in the deck to
reveal a word. If the word shown is BLUE, the player on the BLUE team
responds. If the world shown is RED, the player on the RED team
responds.
For example:
If the card revealed is blue and shows the word (look), the player on
the BLUE team answers by saying the word on the card.
Note: If four people are playing the game, players on each team should
alternate pronouncing the Sight Word Playing Card relevant to their
team.
If the player gives the correct answer,
he/she moves the football (pawn) down the pass line toward his/her
opponent's end zone. If a pass takes the football into the end zone, a
touchdown is scored. Players can use the reproducible record sheet
provided on which to keep score. After a touchdown is scored, the
football (pawn) is placed back on the center football of the game board
and play continues as normal.
The game continues until all the cards
have been used and the team with the most touchdown wins the game.
THE TACKLE
A tackle can be made IF a player
makes an error pronouncing the word and is accurately challenged by
his/her opponent. The opposing team must reveal the correct
pronunciation of the word before taking over the move and passing the
football down their pass lines.
VARIATION
Quick Response Option
To play the Quick Response Option, players can ignore the colors on the
Playing Cards and take turns flipping the cards of the deck. The first
to announce the word correctly can move down his/her team's pass line.
